Matthew A. Feldman is Chairman of the firm, a member of the Executive Committee, and U.S. Chair of the Restructuring Department.
For more than 30 years, Matt has played a major role in numerous complex chapter 11 cases and non-judicial restructurings, including both U.S. and cross-border matters. Matt is most often called upon by his clients to handle their most complex and contentious matters. He has a reputation as a dealmaker who is willing to litigate when necessary. He most often acts for debtors, fulcrum creditors, ad hoc groups and investors and has represented buyers and sellers of assets in bankruptcy totaling more than $100 billion.
In March 2009, Matt was recruited to serve as Chief Legal Advisor to the Obama administration’s Task Force on the Auto Industry. This cabinet-level Treasury Department task force was assembled to help develop the overall strategy to restructure and recapitalize General Motors Corporation and Chrysler LLC, a strategy which resulted in the groundbreaking legal proceedings that implemented a comprehensive financial solution for both companies. The Auto Team conducted complex negotiations with all major constituents of both companies, including Fiat SpA (which acquired Chrysler), the United Auto Workers and major creditors of both auto makers under a compressed timeline set by President Obama.
In 2014, Matt was named a Law360 MVP in Bankruptcy and was selected by Turnarounds & Workouts as an “Outstanding Restructuring Lawyer,” an honor he won in 2009 as well. In 2015, T&W also recognized Matt for his lead role representing the Debtors in the precedent-setting restructuring of Momentive Performance Materials, which was featured on the publication’s listing of the most successful restructurings of 2014. He was included on the Financial Times “US Innovative Lawyers of 2010” report and profiled among its 10 featured attorneys. In 2009 he was named “Dealmaker of the Year” by The American Lawyer. Since 2003 he has been recognized by Chambers and Partners as one of the leading restructuring attorneys internationally and in the U.S. In addition, Matt has been listed in Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America, the International and Domestic Who’s Who Legal, and is recognized in The Best Lawyers in America. He is also consistently recognized in Benchmark Litigation.
