New York, NY (March 6, 2024) --- Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP today announced that Don J. Macbean has joined the Firm as a partner in the Corporate & Financial Services Department.  Don, who focuses on energy and commodities and other complex structured transactions, is based in the Firm’s New York office.

Don is an experienced energy transactions and structured finance attorney who has represented clients across the energy industry in a broad range of transactions, including offtake arrangements, physically and financially-settled hedging transactions, tolling agreements, supply contracts, and transactions involving the purchase and sale of renewable energy credits and other environmental attributes. He is the eighth lateral partner addition to Willkie’s cross-office energy team since the start of 2023. Energy attorneys Dale Smith, Sarah McLean, Tony Johnston and Tan Lu have separately joined Willkie’s Houston team in recent months. A renewable transactions team of partners Eric Pogue, Amanda Rosenberg and Samantha Leavitt joined the Firm’s New York and Los Angeles offices in the Fall of 2023.

Global Chair of Power and Renewable Energy Eric Pogue commented: “Don’s sophisticated experience in the area of complex structured energy transactions will be a tremendous asset to our team. During this crucial time of evolution for the energy sector, Don’s innovative and commercial-minded approach, coupled with his broad skillset and superb leadership skills, will be immensely helpful for our clients.”

John R. Thomas, co-head of Willkie’s Energy & Commodities group, noted: “In addition to the many energy-related transactions on which he has worked, Don’s experience advising clients across different commodity asset classes, in both physical commodity and commodity derivative transactions, brings additional depth to our growing practice and enhances Willkie’s ability to advise clients on the more challenging transactions.”

Don’s practice is focused on energy and commodities transactions and derivatives and structured finance transactions. He advises borrowers, issuers, swap dealers, underwriters and other market participants in deals such as structured products, total return swaps, repurchase contracts, and other hybrid instruments. He guides international clients on accessing the U.S. capital markets through complex debt issuances backed by mortgages and other assets. Don was most recently a partner at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP.

Don commented: “Willkie is a dynamic global firm with a top-notch energy and commodities platform, and I’m very excited to join this exceptional team. This is an exciting time for the energy industry, and I look forward to contributing to the continued expansion of the team and to collaborating with my new colleagues on challenging and innovative matters.”
