The award recognizes the former CFTC chairman’s outstanding “Contribution to Regulatory Reform.”
On May 14, IFLR announced its 2020 Americas Awards winners, naming J. Christopher Giancarlo, senior counsel at Willkie, as the recipient of the notable individual award for “Contribution to Regulatory Reform.”
Mr. Giancarlo is a leading blockchain technology advocate and key contributor to the global discourse on cryptocurrencies and digital assets. During his tenure at the CFTC (2014-2019), he oversaw the first bitcoin futures products entering the marketplace and applied a “Do No Harm” regulatory approach towards blockchain technology. He has also championed the digitization of the US dollar and launched the nonprofit Digital Dollar Foundation in early 2020 to work on issues surrounding the conversion of the US dollar into a cryptocurrency based on blockchain.
Former Chair of the Federal Reserve Paul Volcker (1927-2019), father of ‘The Volcker Rule,’ was also recognized by IFLR for his outstanding achievements in shaping financial regulation.
