Michael Rome is a partner in Willkie’s Litigation Department, where he is a part of the Investigations & Enforcement practice group. Michael is based in Willkie’s Los Angeles and San Francisco offices.
Michael focuses his practice on government investigations, enforcement and complex commercial litigation with a particular emphasis on privacy and consumer protection matters. Michael has represented clients in investigations, enforcement actions, and litigations with several government agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, Attorneys General of several U.S. states, and the Irish Data Protection Commission, among others.
Prior to joining Willkie, Michael served as Regulatory and Litigation Counsel at Google, where he addressed government investigations and enforcement actions brought by U.S. and international regulators, and litigated privacy and data collection cases. Prior to that, he was a litigation partner at Buckley LLP, where his practice focused on government investigations, class actions, and complex commercial disputes involving alleged consumer deception and unfair business practices, among other matters.

Experience
- Represented a leading technology company in defense of regulatory and civil actions related to the collection, use, and retention of location information.
- Represented a FinTech service provider in defense of consumer protection lawsuit filed by the Attorney General of the District of Columbia.
- Represented a green energy company in consumer class action alleging violations of unfair and deceptive practices laws in several states.
- Defended multiple banks and correspondent lenders in breach of contract and indemnification lawsuits brought by RMBS trust securitizers.
- Represented a FinTech platform in lawsuit against the Commissioner of the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.
