Steve Henrick is a senior associate in the Litigation Department of the San Francisco office. He represents individuals, companies, and other entities in white collar criminal matters, internal investigations, and high-stakes civil cases.

Steve has extensive familiarity with transnational litigation, including having represented clients in judicial proceedings and/or arbitrations on five continents. He also has significant defamation law subject matter experience.

Experience

  • Fortune 500 Company, Defendant: Defeated an attempt to confirm a fraudulent $18 billion arbitration award from Africa, including unanimous appellate affirmance of the district court’s decision and a subsequent denial of a petition for certiorari.  Steve and the team later obtained a judgment of over $250,000 against opposing counsel in sua sponte post-judgment sanctions proceedings following counsel’s submission of a fabricated newspaper article to the appellate panel.
  • Fortune 500 Company, Plaintiff: Won a sweeping trial victory in an action asserting claims for fraud and violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.  Steve and the team obtained relief that included prohibiting the enforcement in the United States of a fraudulent $18 billion judgment from South America.  Steve and the team subsequently secured a finding of contempt against the mastermind of the extortionate enterprise in post-judgment enforcement proceedings, which the Second Circuit affirmed on all but one issue.
  • Confidential Internal Investigation: Led a team of attorneys, forensic accountants, and e-discovery support vendors in conducting an extremely time-sensitive confidential internal investigation in response to allegations of document fraud. The investigation successfully resolved the matter while avoiding potentially devastating collateral consequences for the client;
  • Confidential Internal Investigations: Uncovered evidence of significant wrongdoing, despite tremendous obstruction and obfuscation by the targets and their associates, following a confidential internal investigation into allegations of misconduct by a client’s now-former C.E.O. and a now-former subordinate employee. Steve and the team then represented the client in follow-on proceedings before federal regulatory authorities;
  • Confidential Government Liaison: Worked with law enforcement officers from the United States Secret Service and the Los Angeles Police Department in a first-of-its-kind effort to successfully recover hundreds of thousands of dollars of stolen cryptocurrency from an overseas hacker.

*Steve advised on these matters prior to joining Willkie.
