Willkie is among the law firms and reproductive rights organizations supporting a newly-launched nationwide legal defense network to provide legal support to patients and providers navigating the post-Roe legal landscape. The Abortion Defense Network will be managed by the Lawyering Project and run in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union, Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR), If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice, National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), and Resources for Abortion Delivery (RAD).
The Abortion Defense Network will match people providing or supporting abortion services to attorneys who can defend them in a rapidly shifting legal landscape. Users can obtain answers to questions about legal rights pertaining to providing or supporting abortion care, locating care, legal action related to abortion, and finding funds for legal and other expenses.
Willkie joins several of the largest U.S. law firms who have committed to providing legal resources to the Abortion Defense Network to defend access to reproductive healthcare. Willkie’s participation is being led by San Francisco partner Simona Agnolucci. Simona also leads Willkie’s participation in the Legal Alliance for Reproductive Rights, formed through the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Justice and Diversity Center (BASF), where she is a member of the alliance’s steering committee.
For many years, Willkie has advocated for the protection of reproductive rights and partnered with organizations that defend those rights, and will continue to devote pro bono resources to support protection of reproductive rights. The Firm served as counsel for amici on a brief submitted by organizations of women lawyers defending women’s constitutional abortion rights in U.S. Supreme Court case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. The Firm also worked with the ACLU of Nebraska on a pro bono basis on reproductive rights initiatives related to Roe v. Wade.
