In recognition of Earth Day 2021, Willkie counsel and head of the firm’s Environment, Health & Safety Practice William L. Thomas was joined by Director of Advocacy at The Carbon Literacy Project Phil Korbel for a virtual Q&A.
In recognition of Earth Day, Willkie hosted a Green Speaker Series event focused on carbon literacy. William L. Thomas, head of Willkie’s Environment, Health & Safety Practice and member of the firm’s Environmental, Social & Governance Practice, was joined by guest speaker Phil Korbel, Director of Advocacy at The Carbon Literacy Project, for a virtual Q&A session. “Carbon literacy” is a term used to describe an awareness of climate change and the related impacts of our everyday actions.
The event marked the first of Willkie’s environmental guest speaker series, which will provide information on an array of important and relevant environmental topics, how they impact the planet, our daily lives, and services we offer to our clients, as well as key practical takeaways.
In the Q&A, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Korbel discussed President Biden’s recent pledge that the United States will cut its emissions in half by the end of the decade. They also addressed a number of significant actions that we as individuals can take to reduce our carbon footprint, including making the move towards renewable home energy sources, limiting air travel, and reducing the amount of meat in our daily diets, as well as ways we can advance Willkie Green objectives related to climate change. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Korbel were introduced by London partner and member of the firm’s Impact Committee Iben Madsen. The talk concluded with an opportunity for viewers to ask their own questions about carbon literacy and the future of our planet.
The Carbon Literacy Project provides carbon literacy learning covering climate change, carbon footprints, and how everyone can do their part. The organization is globally unique and was recognized as such by the UN at COP21, in Paris, where it was awarded as a TAP100, one of 100 worldwide Transformative Action Programs.
Mr. Korbel is a social entrepreneur, broadcaster and community activist based in the U.K. He is a co-founder of Cooler, a Community Interest Company that delivers projects and advocacy to create a low carbon future.
