Paris partner Daniel Hurstel recently addressed an international conference in Vienna focusing on the legal, business and economic implications of the expanding European single market, which currently comprises nearly 500 million people in 25 member states. The conference, which was sponsored by The European Lawyer and the International Bar Association, was attended by over 180 delegates, including leading political figures, policymakers, business leaders, and lawyers, from 30 countries. Mr. Hurstel urged accession countries to get involved in the CESR (Committee of European Securities Regulators). He stated “the UK grasped the importance, sooner than others, of influencing European legislation on the basis of the City’s interests. We are only at level one (basic principles) for most texts and level two (implementing measures) is largely still to come; so it’s important to get involved.” The conference and highlights from Mr. Hurstel’s remarks are featured in the June issue of The European Lawyer. Mr. Hurstel serves as Vice Chair of the Capital Markets Forum of the International Bar Association. He was appointed to serve as a member of the Consultative Working Group charged with assisting the European “Expert Group” on the drafting of the European directive on Prospectus and Disclosure Requirements set up by the CESR.
