Our Most Valuable Asset Is Our People

At Willkie, we believe everyone benefits from a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we are committed to this goal by recruiting, retaining, and promoting people of all backgrounds and cultural experiences.

About Our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
icon quote

Willkie strongly supports diversity among its practicing attorneys, starting with a real commitment to attracting talented diverse law students. Each year Willkie recruits at the Lavender Law Career Fair, which provides LGBTQ+ law students and lawyers the opportunity to make meaningful connections with LGBTQ+ Willkie Associates and Partners. I very much enjoy my practice at Willkie, which has been shaped in significant part by the interactions I had with the Willkie Attorney who recruited me at Lavender Law.

Willkie’s summer program includes discussion panelshops and interactive seminars that provide summers with a solid understanding of the several transactional and litigation practices at Willkie. These programs helped me determine the best fit for me.

Willkie strikes a really good balance between supporting young associates in getting their desired experience and letting associates drive their own career. You get to work in whatever groups you like, whether in one group exclusively or multiple groups.

Mentoring and feedback are key.

Summer law clerk mentoring is central to our efforts to integrate new lawyers into the Firm.

Each summer law clerk is assigned to a team of partner and associate mentors who make introductions, help ease the transition from law school to practice, and otherwise provide guidance and support. Summer law clerks receive additional mentoring from the senior lawyers working with them, who make it a point to provide real-time feedback. To ensure that they receive comprehensive feedback, summer law clerks are formally reviewed twice during the summer in a process that mirrors the review process followed for full-time associates.

I had the opportunty to do substantive work with associates and partners at all levels. This even included working with the chairman of the Firm in my first week. Sitting down one-on-one amd receiving constructive feedback was unexpected and invaluable.

Willkie’s summer assignment system enabled me to work in several practice areas. The attorneys I worked with were invested in my experience, made a genuine effort to integrate me into their teams, and provided constant feedback on my progress.

We stress collaboration on firm business at every level.

A benefit of working at Willkie is having the opportunity to join a number of strong legal practices. We're good at complex, premium and cross-border work. And our large international footprint means our multi-jurisdictional regulatory capabilities are second to none.

The firm’s practice groups are organized on a global basis. Cross-border, multi-office teams are the norm at Willkie. This creates opportunities for our US lawyers not only in our U.S. offices, but also in relevant practice groups across Europe and Asia.

Professional development is key.

Beyond working together, we make it a point to get to know one another on a personal level. We encourage lateral associate participation in firm committees. Lateral associates also become part of our extensive mentoring networks, and we host a series of social events to introduce laterals to one another and to the other Willkie lawyers.

We don’t just say we are one firm; we act like one firm right across the world. We bring together the knowledge, experience and energy of the whole firm to help our clients. We encourage, support and share in the success of all our colleagues. We know we deliver best when working as a team rather than as individuals operating alone. Being a great colleague and working efficiently and effectively with our clients and other stakeholders around the world to achieve the right outcome is crucial to our success.
